Life Care Centers’ Dementia Specialist David Currier has a uniquely powerful understanding of how music unifies us through lived experiences. He was the original drummer for the band Boston and a former MCA/Curb Records recording artist. He has written and recorded songs, along with his co-writer and friend, Linda Chase.
As David Currier describes, patients with Alzheimer’s often need help being guided back to the music that has enriched their lives. At Life Care Centers’ Northeast Division, David works to incorporate activities that provide purposeful engagement for those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
One of the programs the Activity Department introduced involved creating personalized music playlists for each patient. For patients experiencing common dementia symptoms of anger and anxiety, hearing music they have deep connections to can be a grounding, calming experience.
